I’ve heard a lot of chatter in the running community lately about ENERGYbits, a new kind of fuel people are consuming to improve performance. When given an opportunity to try them myself, I jumped at the chance. As I’m starting to get into my marathon training I’m looking for any possible edge I can give myself.

So you’re wondering what ENERGYbits are? Here’s the explanation from their website:

Made from 100% organicallly grown spirulina algae and loaded with 40 nutrients, ENERGYbits® algae tabs have the highest concentration of protein in the world (64%) all for just one calorie per tab. Endorsed by the United Nations as the most nutritious food on earth, spirulina algae has been a favorite of Olympic gold medalists for decades and is a super food in every sense of the word, delivering instant and enduring energy to your brain and body.

Skeptical? I was too.

Last month Will, Gavin and I headed over for a week at our favorite place: Disney World! The thing is, Disney is a whole lot different in June than it is in February. It is HOT. And exhausting. Hauling a 2 yr old, a stroller, and a backpack full of toddler supplies becomes quite a feat. I was so tired at the end of each day but I couldn’t afford to forego my training schedule. So when I had an 8 mile run scheduled after a day of park hopping, I decided to give these a try.

I took about 20 of them (they’re little pill-looking tablets) about 15 minutes before heading out. Some people chew them but I swallowed them whole. The smell, while a little “ocean-like”, was not strong at all in my opinion. The crazy thing is within the next 30 minutes I really felt like I was coming alive. Ended up having a great training run despite my Disney-inducted exhaustion.

Placebo effect? I considered that. But I tried them for 3 other training runs and had the same result each time. These little suckers work! And it’s a double win because besides the benefit to your workout, you’re putting some really nutritious stuff in your body. Definitely a win/win.

I was not compensated in any way for this review. But I can say with certainty that ENERGYbits are going to become an important part of my marathon training regime. I will be powered by Bits!
